About the Exhibition

Scenes from Behind the Wall: Images of East Germany, 1989/1990 offers a window into a pivotal period in history. Between December 1989 and January 1990, photographers Helmut Brinkmann and Page Chichester documented East Germany shortly after its reopening to the West and during the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Capturing the stark realities and budding optimism among the German people, their photographs provide an opportunity to reflect on this critical historical juncture thirty five years later. While the exhibition documents the details of a particular time and place, it has an enduring significance that resonates with the ongoing struggles for democracy, human rights, and self determination facing people and nations around the world in our contemporary moment.
