We provide a platform for students and individuals with a passion for art to gain invaluable experience in arts management, the exhibition process, and essential skills like proper art handling and public communication.
At Mason Exhibitions, we believe in nurturing the next generation of art professionals and providing them with practical knowledge and hands-on training. Our internship program is designed to give you an in-depth understanding of how art exhibitions are curated, managed, and presented to the public. You will have the chance to work alongside experienced professionals in the field and gain insights into the intricacies of the art world.
Program Highlights
Exhibition Process: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire exhibition process, from conceptualization and selection of artworks to installation and dismantling. You will learn about curatorial decisions, exhibition design, and the logistics involved in organizing successful art displays.
We offer internship opportunities at two primary locations:
Mason Exhibitions Arlington
Gillespie Gallery of Art in the George Mason University Art & Design Building
Art Management: Gain hands-on experience in art management, encompassing the fulfillment of the organization's vision, mission, public programming, outreach, and development strategy. Engage in the day-to-day operations of the organization, acquiring practical skills and knowledge in managing artistic initiatives.
Proper Art Handling: Learn the art of handling valuable and delicate artworks with utmost care and precision. Our experts will guide you in the proper techniques of packaging, transportation, and installation to ensure the safety and integrity of the exhibited pieces.
Public Communication: Develop your communication and interpersonal skills by engaging with visitors, providing guided tours, and assisting in educational programs. You will learn how to effectively convey the artistic vision behind an exhibition and engage diverse audiences in meaningful conversations about art.
Mentorship and Networking: Benefit from mentorship and guidance from seasoned professionals in the art industry. Our team will provide support, feedback, and advice to help you navigate your career path. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to network with artists, curators, and other art professionals, expanding your professional contacts and opening doors to future opportunities.
University Art Collections : The George Mason University Art Collection, showcased in various campus offices and spaces, primarily comprises gifts from alumni and friends, reflecting diverse tastes and collecting interests. Under the current curator, the collection expands, prioritizing service to faculty and students across all disciplines. George Mason students and the collection manager actively research and document the collection, featured on the Mason Exhibition website. Those intrigued by collection research can select one or two objects for an in-depth exploration.
Eligibility and Application Process
We are excited to offer an internship program that welcomes both students and individuals with a passion for art who are interested in gaining valuable experience. In addition, we also provide volunteering opportunities for those who are eager to contribute their skills to our organization.
To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter expressing your interest in the internship, and any relevant coursework or experience. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview to further assess their suitability for the program.
Please note that if you are pursuing course credit, it is necessary to notify your department in advance and inquire about the availability of internship credit.
